Information updated based on the latest official APS India and dMAT/g.a.s.t. information. Requirements and test schedules may change.
What is dMAT?
The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardised academic aptitude test introduced as an additional element in the APS documentation and verification process for selected Indian applicants applying for Master's-level programmes in Germany.
It is administered by g.a.s.t. (Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development), while APS India remains responsible for academic document verification.
The dMAT is designed to assess cognitive, analytical and academic application skills, rather than simply testing memorised information.
Important: dMAT does not replace APS
dMAT + APS + University Eligibility + Admission Requirements — each has a different role in your Germany application.
Who Needs dMAT?
The current dMAT requirement applies to selected Indian applicants applying for a Master's programme in Germany, where their previous undergraduate degree falls within one of these fields:
Engineering
Commerce, Accounting, Finance & Economics
Business & Management
For applicants in these affected fields, the dMAT is required as part of the APS documentation for Summer Semester 2027 and subsequent Master's intakes, unless a transitional exemption applies.
Not sure whether your degree is included?
Some interdisciplinary degrees can be difficult to classify. The final classification is based on the official affected-fields list published by APS India.

Who Does Not Currently Need the dMAT?
- Students applying for Bachelor's programmes
- PhD applicants
- Applicants whose previous degree falls outside the affected fields
- Applicants participating in officially confirmed exchange programmes
- Double-degree programmes
- Official university partnership programmes
- Applicants covered by the current transitional arrangements
Applicants who have already completed the APS procedure and received their APS certificate do not need to take the dMAT retrospectively for that completed procedure.
dMAT & APS
How Does dMAT Fit Into the APS Process?
The dMAT is an additional element of the APS documentation.
- APS document verification
- anabin recognition
- University eligibility requirements
- University admission requirements
- Visa requirements
If the dMAT requirement applies to you, you can submit your APS documents before your dMAT certificate is available. However, APS India can issue the APS certificate only after the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked.
dMAT Exam Structure
What does the dMAT Test consist of?
Core Module
- Figure Sequences
- Mathematical Equations
- Latin Squares
General Academic Module
For the APS process in India, the General Academic Module is the subject module. It assesses the ability to apply cognitive and analytical skills to academic problem-solving situations. The emphasis is on application and transfer of knowledge rather than rote memorisation.

How Is the dMAT Scored?
Your dMAT certificate reports a dMAT score converted to a 0–200 scale, with a mean of 100, and a percentile rank showing your performance relative to other test participants.
A separate dMAT score is reported for the Core Module and the subject module. The overall result is calculated by adding the two module scores.
A particular score does not guarantee university admission. German universities make their own admission decisions and may determine independently how they use the dMAT information in their admission process.
